Beard Oils & Balms... when should you use each & how? Things that can go wrong!
If you’re serious about growing and maintaining a magnificent beard, you’ve likely heard about beard oils and balms. These grooming essentials are more than just trendy products—they’re fundamental tools for keeping your facial hair healthy, soft, and well-groomed. But with so many options on the market, understanding when to use them, how to apply them properly, and what ingredients to avoid can feel overwhelming. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll break down everything you need to know about beard oils and butters
Look for beard care products formulated with quality carrier oils, nourishing butters and carefully selected ingredients. Understanding the full ingredient list helps you choose products that suit your preferences and your skin
Understanding Beard Oil: Your Daily Hydration Hero
Beard oil is the cornerstone of any beard care routine. Think of it as a leave-in conditioner specifically formulated for your facial hair and the skin beneath it. Made from a blend of carrier oils like jojoba, argan, sweet almond, and grapeseed oil, along with essential oils for fragrance, beard oil serves multiple purposes that go far beyond simply making your beard smell nice.
The primary function of beard oil is to replace the natural oils your skin produces—called sebum—that get stripped away during washing or lost as your beard grows longer. Your skin can only produce so much sebum, and once your beard reaches a certain length, that natural oil simply can’t travel all the way down the hair shaft. This is where beard oil steps in, providing essential hydration to both your beard hair and the skin underneath.
Regular use of quality beard oil delivers impressive benefits: it eliminates the dreaded beard itch that plagues new beard growers, prevents flaking and beard dandruff, softens coarse facial hair, adds a healthy shine, reduces tangles, and creates an overall more manageable beard. Perhaps most importantly, by keeping the skin beneath your beard properly moisturised, beard oil creates the ideal environment for healthy beard growth.
When and How to Use Beard Oil
The ideal time to apply beard oil is immediately after a shower when your pores are open and your beard is still slightly damp. The dampness helps your facial hair absorb the oil more effectively. Start with just a few drops—typically three to five drops for shorter beards, and up to ten drops for longer, fuller beards (some might say that's greedy, but not us). Warm the oil between your palms, then massage it into your skin first, working from the roots outward. Don’t forget to distribute it through the length of your beard, reaching all the way to the tips.
For most men, applying beard oil once daily is sufficient. However, those with particularly dry skin or living in harsh climates (natural seasonal changes, mountaineering, hiking, scrambling, mountain biking...) might benefit from twice-daily application—once in the morning and once before bed. The key is finding your beard’s sweet spot through experimentation.
Understanding Beard Balm: Your Conditioning and Styling Companion
While beard oil focuses primarily on hydration, beard balm takes things a step further by offering deep conditioning along with styling capabilities. Beard balm has a thicker consistency thanks to its inclusion of natural butters like shea butter and cocoa butter alongside carrier oils and essential oils and beeswax. Our balms are lighter than some others out there, it will provide a hold, lock in moisture and provide a barrier to protect against drying out - good for those activities mentioned earlier!
The butters in this formula provide rich nutrients that penetrate deeply into the hair shaft, offering longer-lasting moisture than oil alone. Shea butter is particularly beneficial as it contains vitamins and acts as an excellent anti-inflammatory agent. Cocoa butter brings powerful antioxidants to the table, helping to heal damaged hair and weakened skin cells.
One of the standout benefits of beard balm is its ability to tame unruly hairs and provide a natural, matte finish. Unlike beard oil, which can leave your beard with a noticeable shine, beard balm absorbs more slowly and doesn’t create that potentially greasy appearance. This makes it ideal for men who want their beard to look naturally conditioned rather than overtly styled.
When and How to Use Beard Balm
Beard balm shines in several scenarios. It’s particularly effective for medium to long beards that need extra control and deeper conditioning. To apply beard balm, scrape out a pea sized amount (experiment) and warm it between your hands until it softens (it will soften immediately). Unlike beard oil, which you work into the skin first, beard balm should be applied primarily to the outer portions of your beard, gradually working your way to the inner areas. Focus on the mid-lengths and ends of your beard hair, where conditioning is most needed. Use a beard comb to distribute it evenly and style your beard into your desired shape. It can be used overnight to nourish your beard, however its more common to use an oil for that or beard butter, despite the same butters often used in both products.
The Power Duo: Using Beard Oil and Balm Together
Here’s where things get exciting: you don’t have to choose between beard oil and balm. In fact, using them together creates the ultimate grooming routine. Apply beard oil first to hydrate your skin and provide lightweight moisture to your beard. After allowing the oil to absorb for about 5-10 minutes, follow up with beard balm for additional conditioning and styling control. This layered approach ensures your beard receives comprehensive care from root to tip. Again give the balm some time to do its thing before combing it and styling it.
The Dark Side: Ingredients You Must Avoid
Not all beard oils and balms are created equal, and some contain ingredients that can do more harm than good. Understanding what to avoid is just as important as knowing what to seek out.
Parabens are preservatives used to extend product shelf life, but they come with significant downsides. These chemicals can be absorbed through the skin and into the bloodstream, where the body mistakes them for estrogen. For men, this hormonal confusion can lead to imbalanced hormone levels and associated health issues. Quality beard products use natural preservatives like vitamin E instead.
Sulfates have no business being in beard care products. These harsh cleansing agents—the same ones used to degrease engines—strip away your beard’s natural oils, leaving both hair and skin dry, irritated, and vulnerable. They create that bubbly lather (not a Lucky Lather) we’ve been conditioned to associate with cleanliness, but your beard doesn’t need foam to get clean.
Mineral Oil and Petroleum-Based Ingredients might seem moisturising, but they actually create a barrier on your skin that prevents it from breathing properly. This can clog pores, trap dirt and bacteria, interfere with natural oil production, and even slow beard growth. These cheap filler ingredients offer no real nourishment and can contain toxins if not fully refined.
Silicones create the illusion of soft, glossy hair without actually providing any real hydration. They coat the hair shaft rather than penetrating it, which means your beard isn’t truly being conditioned—it’s just being temporarily masked. Over time, silicone buildup can make your beard look dull and lifeless.
Alcohol might help other ingredients penetrate the skin, but it’s incredibly drying and can cause significant irritation, especially for men with sensitive skin. Alcohol-free formulations provide all the benefits without the harsh side effects.
Phthalates are chemicals used to make fragrances last longer, but they’re known endocrine disruptors linked to reproductive and developmental issues. These plasticizers have been banned from children’s toys since 2009—they have no place on your face either.
The Importance of Quality, Thoughtfully Chosen Ingredients
At Lucky Lather, we believe great beard care starts with carefully selected ingredients that serve a purpose. From nourishing, plant-derived carrier oils to conditioning ingredients that help soften and manage your beard, every component has a role to play in the performance of a well-formulated product.
Natural oils can help condition beard hair, improve softness and reduce the dry, rough feeling that often makes a beard difficult to manage. The right formulation helps keep both your beard and the skin beneath it feeling comfortable and well cared for.
We also believe in being honest about what goes into our products. Our formulations vary, and some contain parfum to create the distinctive fragrances behind our signature scents. Our beard balms also contain beeswax, which provides structure and helps give the beard light hold. As beeswax is an animal-derived ingredient, we do not describe our balms as vegan.
We believe cruelty-free practices, ingredient transparency and product performance should go hand in hand. Rather than relying on broad claims, we want you to understand what you are using on your beard and why those ingredients are there.
Our approach is simple: carefully chosen ingredients, distinctive fragrances and practical beard care—without compromising on transparency.
The Pitfalls: Too Much of a Good Thing
Even with the highest quality products, improper use can cause problems. Using too much beard oil is one of the most common mistakes men make, and it’s easier to do than you might think (its really easy to do!)
Overusing beard oil leads to a greasy, weighed-down appearance that makes your beard look wet rather than well-groomed. Excess oil that your beard can’t absorb will transfer to everything your beard touches—your shirt collar, your pillow, your phone, your hands. Beyond the inconvenience, too much oil can actually clog your pores, leading to acne, inflammation, and even infected hair follicles. These painful red bumps are your skin’s way of saying you’ve crossed the line from helpful to harmful.
The rule of thumb is simple: your beard oil should fully absorb within twenty to thirty minutes of application. If you run your hands through your beard half an hour after applying and they come away shiny or greasy, you’ve used too much. Start with less than you think you need and gradually increase until you find the perfect amount for your unique beard.
Using too little is also problematic, though less common. Insufficient oil means you’re not getting the full benefits of hydration and protection. Your beard will feel dry, look dull, and be more prone to itching and dandruff. Finding the balance takes experimentation, but it’s worth the effort.
The Bottom Line: Quality Matters
When it comes to beard care, choosing well-formulated products can make a real difference to how your beard looks and feels. Quality carrier oils and conditioning ingredients can help soften beard hair, improve manageability and care for the skin beneath it. The key is finding a formulation that suits your beard and your skin.
